We are in a difficult time in which our body has to adapt to several changes. Medicine confirms that the problem is real.
The proverb says that “the mañanitas of April are very sweet to sleep”. If with the change of season you have noticed a significant drop in your energy, know that you are not the only one. Several factors conspire to make laziness accentuate in this month of spring and it is harder than ever to get up to go to work or start any other activity.
It is not, therefore, a simple commonplace derived from popular wisdom. In any case, don’t despair. If laziness has taken control of your mind and body, there are several ways to combat it through some changes. The important thing is that tiredness does not lead to irritation. If, on the other hand, you suffer from insomnia problems, you can take advantage of this indolent month to recover your sleep cycles.
Why does it happen?
Asthenia, which prevents us from performing tasks that we would normally do easily, appears for a whole series of reasons.
In the first place, fatigue is usually attributed to the fact that the days are longer and our body has to get used to both the time change and more sunlight. On the other hand, the increase in temperatures also plays a counterproductive role in this progressive adaptation process. In short, the heat is not of particular help.
The loss of energy will last for a few weeks. Vitamin supplements are not of great help in these cases.
Another cause is usually found in medications. On the one hand, we are dragging the consequences of the drugs used against winter diseases, while on the other, allergy sufferers must entrust their well-being to antihistamines, whose main side effect is an unpleasant sedative effect.
Myths and solutions
To combat all these discomforts, many decide to bet on vitamins and food supplements. Are they truly effective or are they mere placebos? Such compounds are intended for diets that are deficient in nutrients, or for athletes, who may see a general decrease in nutrients as a result of intense physical activity. According to Dr. Sergio Harari , for a circumstantial event such as the one we are pointing out, its usefulness is, however, very limited.
It is advisable to go to bed an hour earlier and take care at this time, more than ever, that sleep is of special quality.
The doctors’ advice focuses on trying to pass the procedure, which will last at most a few weeks, with the greatest possible dignity, like someone who has the flu. For Giacchino Mennuni, professor of neurology at the Catholic University of Rome, our internal clock needs at least a week to be completely reset : “The best way to synchronize the biological mechanism with the natural one is, without a doubt, rest. It is better to be patient and accept the needs of our body: it is a few days, then our internal clock picks up the right rhythm and aligns with the season. Sleepiness and tiredness will disappear, although they will resurface in the next drastic change of season, that is, in autumn”.
However, it is possible to do something to make this brief stage go in the best way, taking special care to rest at night. To do this, doctors advise going to bed an hour earlier, because the body will now need more rest than in winter. This rest has to be accompanied by a good quality of sleep; To improve it, it is essential to increase physical activity, but never close to the time we go to bed, as the effect will be the opposite of what is desired. If we only have the last hours of the afternoon, it is better to replace sport with other types of hobbies such as yoga or meditation.
It is particularly important to also bring forward the time of dinner (which should never be copious), take naps of a few minutes in the middle of the day, avoid the intake of stimulant substances six hours before going to bed, reduce alcohol consumption and put aside phones or computers a couple of hours before the moment when we are about to fall into the arms of Morpheus.
