How to Avoid Drowsiness

Drowsiness at WorkIf you frequently yawn, nod off at the first opportunity, experience blurred vision, lack attention, or struggle to keep your eyes open, you may be experiencing daytime drowsiness.

Typically, drowsiness occurs when metabolism slows down, and there are many daily activities that cause it to slow down. Digestion is one of them, as when we eat copiously, the body slows down because all efforts are focused on digesting food. The same happens when consuming large amounts of calories or fatty foods. This slowing down of the body will produce a sleepy effect that will appear after meals and reduce our performance. Also, poor sleep quality at night will affect our desire to sleep throughout the day, as waking up at night and sleeping little will not allow us to rest as we want and will force us to feel unwell all day.

But not all causes of drowsiness are due to external factors; in many cases, they are due to internal imbalances such as lack of iron in the body. This deficiency will leave our energy depleted, which will make us sleepy throughout the day. The same happens when we have thyroid problems, as this gland regulates metabolic activity. When it slows down, our body goes slower, and this translates into sleepiness and fatigue without really knowing the reasons. Following medical treatment can also cause drowsiness. Therefore, if drowsiness is a common occurrence in our life, it is important that we visit a doctor to find out if there is a bigger problem behind it.

If you’re wondering how to avoid drowsiness in case of external factors, you can start by finding out what problems affect you and make you sleepy during the day, those that affect your daily performance and lack of sleep. Therefore, it is necessary that you sleep and rest, to be able to face with energy the demanding work that the day presents.

If you have too many things to do during the day, and you think that by stealing hours of sleep you will be able to do more things, you are not entirely correct. First, because you will be more tired, and second, because you will be less focused, doing things worse.
Sleep as much as you need to and stop doing unnecessary things, distribute your time evenly and organize the week, so that you have time to do everything, and of course, to sleep.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and/or stimulating drinks after six in the evening, as they hinder your sleep. A walk after eating is another alternative that can also help you.

If your time allows it, giving yourself the pleasure of taking a nap is priceless, so whenever you can, rest for a while (15-20 minutes is enough) in the afternoon. You can do this on the weekend if work doesn’t allow it during the week.
