Mattress Maintenance

Cleaning and maintenance of mattresses are very important points to keep in mind, as they are items that are in direct contact with the human body. That’s why it’s necessary to implement a series of basic steps to ensure that mattresses remain as good as new. It is most recommended to air them out regularly and rotate them to avoid deformation, although it’s also advisable to clean them using a vacuum cleaner periodically, at least once a month, to remove and eliminate dust mites and dust residues.

Follow some simple maintenance rules that will extend the life of your mattress, although proper and adequate maintenance will largely depend on the type of mattress:

– Make the bed properly.

– Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and carefully read any maintenance guide. Always remove the plastic cover, as it can lead to condensation and moisture.

If the product has a factory smell, let it breathe, uncovered, for a few hours with the bedroom windows open. Some simple maintenance habits make the appearance and composition of your bed last for more years.

– Airing: If we make the bed as soon as we get up every day, the mattress won’t be able to breathe and will start to accumulate odors. Additionally, in seasons like summer, when we sweat a lot, it’s advisable to air it daily for approximately thirty minutes to an hour. Open the bedroom windows for better airing. Every day when you get up, leave the bed unmade for about 20 minutes or more in the summer, to avoid odor accumulation and allow it to breathe.

– Protect the mattress with a cover; it should be of good quality and washable, there are also covers treated with an antibacterial agent that stops the proliferation of fungi and mites, ideal for people who suffer from asthma.

– Cleaning: Clean them periodically to remove dust residues. It is advised never to wet a mattress, rub with a mild detergent using a damp cloth. It should not be dry cleaned because the chemicals used can damage the filling materials.

– Flipping: Given that not all parts of our body weigh the same and that our partner, if there is one, will have a different weight than ours, it will be convenient to flip the mattresses to avoid deformation. The mattress should be turned every three months, rotating it both from left to right and from head to foot. (Except for most Memory Foam mattresses which only need to be rotated from head to foot as they have only one usable side). This is important for hygiene and maintenance reasons.

– Choose a mattress with an anti-mite barrier. Vacuuming mattresses to get rid of mites is a useless procedure as this type of parasite has tiny “claws” with which it adheres to the mattress, just as it does to human skin. It doesn’t matter if you wash, brush or rub, the mite remains there.

– Always use a suitable base. Never use boards between the mattress and the base of your bed, as this can reduce the life of the mattress and invalidate the terms of the warranty.

– Be careful with the use of the mattress; do not sit on the edges of the mattress and prevent children from jumping on it.

– Do not fold the mattress to store or transport it. The handles are suitable for positioning the mattress, not for lifting it.

– Do not remove the label, it is necessary in case of warranty.
