There are two types of people: those who are unable to do any activity if they do not sleep enough and others who are very active if they sleep less.
This has an explanation, since a recent study shows us how some people do not need to sleep eight hours and this is due to a gene.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has presented a study whose results concluded that people who were able to sleep six hours a day and were not impaired in their functionality had a modification of the BHLHE41 gene.
The sampling was carried out on 100 identical twins, of which one of each couple had a mutation of this gene. All those who had this mutation slept five hours a night, while twins who did not have it slept an hour and 5 minutes longer.
Cognitive performance was measured every two hours during the period of sleep deprivation by means of the psychomotor vigilance test. After this period of sleep, the twin without the mutation slept for 9.5 hours, while his or her brother or sister slept for just eight hours to catch up.
Those who did not have the mutation had more fatigue problems and it took much more effort to face the day and perform activities after about 36 hours without sleep.
Renata Pellegrino, a research associate at the Center for Applied Genomics atChildren’s Hospital of Philadelphia said: “This work provides a second important genetic variant associated with sleep deprivation and, for the first time, shows the role of BHLHE41 in sleep deprivation resistance in humans.”
So we can conclude that our need for sleep is a purely biological requirement, and not a personal preference. Not only should we eat properly and practice moderate exercise, but we should also respect at least our seven hours of sleep a day in order to enjoy optimal health, be productive and be rested every day.
