First of all, it must be said that the correct term would be “daydreams” and not “dreams”, although in popular slang this second name has been adopted as the correct one. Dreams (or daydreams) are mental manifestations of sights, sounds, and sensations that a person has while sleeping. It is an involuntary mental process, that is, even if we don’t want to, we do it and it has always been a topic about which there has been a lot of speculation and about which there are hundreds of theories. Leaving aside this multitude of theories, there are some that have ceased to be hypotheses to be validated by science. We leave you with the 15 most curious facts about dreams:
- Dreams occur in any of the phases of sleep, however, the most elaborate ones occur in the REM phase, that is, in the last stretch of the cycle that is where our brain is most active.
- Has it ever happened to you that you are not sure if you are dreaming or not? Some dreams are so real that we sometimes mistake them for reality, especially when we dream that we wake up in the middle of the night. To check if you are dreaming or not, you don’t need to pinch yourself, just try to read something or distinguish the time on a clock. If you are unable to do it or have a hard time, you are dreaming.
- One of the most common dreams among humans is the sensation of falling into the void, tripping or falling out of bed. If we think about it, these dreams always occur in the first minutes of being asleep (look at the clock and you will see that you had only been asleep for a few minutes). This happens because there is an imbalance between the impulses of the vestibular system and the kinesthetic system, since being half asleep produces an error of information between these two systems and gives us a wake-up call to be alert and wake up.
- All people, except some who have some extreme psychological disorder, can dream. Many studies have been carried out to check whether blind people dream or not, and yes, blind people also dream. Of course, those people who were born blind, that is, who have never seen any image, have dreams based on sounds, smells and touch.
- Only the existence of dreams in Homo sapiens has been 100% confirmed. This is due to the difficult task of proving that an animal dreams or not. Even so, it is believed that at least the rest of mammals also dream, since they have a sleep cycle very similar to that of humans. This theory is mainly based on an animal moving, can even express emotions, while asleep (have you ever seen your pet wag its tail or muzzle while sleeping?).
- The so-called “sleep paralysis” is one of the most feared sleep disorders and one of the worst things that can happen to you while you sleep and consists of seeing paranormal images without being able to flee, because your body is paralyzed. This disorder occurs because the neurotransmitters that block muscles during dreams are still active even though the brain is already awake. When you are still in a state of transition, your imagination generates fantastic images that it interprets as real.
- Although we believe that sleep is synonymous with rest, this is not the case for our brain, which shows more activity while we are asleep. This explains why we can have between 4 and 6 dreams every night.
- 12% of the population that dreams of images, dreams in black and white.
- Many times we wake up with the feeling of having had a pleasant or unpleasant dream but we cannot remember what it consisted of. This happens because dreams follow one another so quickly that the brain cannot settle them in memory, only in emotion. That’s why when you have a nightmare and it wakes you up startled, you usually remember the dream perfectly, because when you wake up your brain can settle it in the memory.
- Smells influence our dreams. If you sleep in a place that smells bad, your brain will associate it with something uncomfortable and let an unpleasant dream emerge. That’s why it’s important that your room always smells good.
- Your personality remains the same even when you sleep. That is why in your dreams you will be angry, surprised and happy about the same things as in real life.
- Despite popular belief, women have the same number of erotic dreams as men, but they dream differently. Men usually dream of sex with strangers and in exciting situations and women usually have sex with celebrities in dreams.
- Nightmares are not only about fear, there are nightmares based on failure, worry, confusion, sadness and guilt. The most recurrent nightmares in men have to do with physical aggression and the most frequent nightmares in women have to do with their relationships.
- We dream in periods of between 5 and 20 minutes, adding all these small periods throughout the life of a human has come to the conclusion that we can spend approximately 6 years of our lives dreaming.
- Do you know what lucid dreaming is? They are dreams that we can control. 50% of the population claims to have experienced one at least once in their lives.
Did you know all these curiosities about dreams? Of course, the world of rest never ceases to amaze us!
