Whether you are expecting your first baby or if you already have children, this post will interest you. The room of the little ones in the house must be well prepared for them: the color, the location, the accessories, the bed, the lighting and ventilation… everything has to be adapted to them.
It is normal for doubts to arise, especially if you are a new parent, so we give you some guidelines and tips to follow that we hope will solve your doubts:
- Subtle lighting. Direct light can make it difficult for the baby to sleep, better a table lamp than a powerful ceiling lamp. Avoid fluorescent tubes and halogen lamps. Also, try to make natural lighting predominant during the day.
- Quiet place without noise. If your house is large enough to be able to choose a room, think that your baby will sleep a lot during the first years of life, so it should be located in a quiet place in the house and without too much noise. Better if it is away from the entrance, the living room and other sources of noise.
- Key temperature. Temperature is one of the most important points to take into account in children’s rooms. Between 18 and 22 degrees is ideal, you should neither go below 18 nor above 22 degrees. It is also not advisable to wrap the child’s crib/bed with too much clothing or use a mattress that transmits more than one degree of heat.
- Humidity. Humidity below 30% could lead to respiratory problems, so it is advisable to measure the humidity and make it between 60% and 70%.
- Clean room. Of course, something fundamental is to always keep the space clean and tidy.
- Neutral colors. During the child’s first years it is advisable that the walls are neutral colors, such as beige, light green, light blue and pale pink. When the child turns two, the color can be changed to a stronger one, since strong colors stimulate creativity. Of course, the paint must be non-toxic, washable and, if possible, eco-friendly. If you prefer wallpaper to decorate the wall, make sure it is washable.
- Without too much decoration. The walls should not be overloaded, at most place some children’s paintings or photos of the baby and the family.
- No cables or plugs. Plugs should always be covered with child restraint systems and cords out of reach and attached to the wall.
- The soil. The floor must be made of a resistant material, which does not absorb stains and is warm. If your child doesn’t have an allergy to dust mites, a carpet or rug is the best option.
- Less is more. Place a few pieces of furniture, only the necessary ones: a crib/bed, a chest of drawers, a changing table and a wardrobe. Realize that this will surely be his playroom as well. Later you can incorporate a piece of furniture to store toys and a desk.
- Different areas. If the room is large, it is better to use the same room where you sleep as a room to play, but enabling different areas: reading area, sleep area, play area… If the room is small, it is better to play elsewhere, but remind him that the rest area is only for that.
- Bed linen. Keep in mind that a baby’s ribcage doesn’t support the same weight as an adult’s, and that using excessive bedding can cause breathing problems. Everything should be made of natural fibers such as cotton.
- Mattress. As we have already said, it should not transmit more than one degree of heat. A crib mattress should be breathable and have just the right firmness. Make sure it doesn’t contain toxic elements or materials that can react with fluids. It must be a mattress certified by a control body.
