Keeping our mattress clean is essential for a quality rest. To give us an idea, the firm SANITIZED®, which specialises in the hygienic treatment of fabrics, states that people can lose on average around 1.5 liters of sweat and 1.5 grams of skin flakes each night. And if up to 10,000 mites can live in a gram of dust…
Is it important to keep our mattress clean?
If we add to this the fact that heat and humidity create ideal conditions for the proliferation of fungi and bacteria, it is clear that we must take the hygiene of our rest seriously.
Although dozens of tips, tricks and recommendations on how to clean our mattress circulate on the internet, from Mi Colchón we want to start by recommending the correct protection of your mattress, because prevention is the key to keeping your mattress clean and dry.
1.Protect your mattress with a cover.
Choose the mattress cover that best suits those who are going to rest on it. You have all the options: waterproof, breathable, padded, thermo-regulating protectors, but as long as they have a bacterial treatment that ensures that it is hypoallergenic.
2. Ventilate your room.
Once we have our mattress perfectly protected with its cover, we must also take into account the environment, the room. Keep your bedroom ventilated, 10 minutes a day is enough, and shake the sheets and pillows, all before making the bed. And if you have humidity problems in the room, it is even more important to maintain this daily routine. Our mattress will remain as good as the first day thanks to these small actions, and mainly thanks to the protector.
3. Maintain your mattress correctly.
It is also important to see the mattress maintenance recommendations that all manufacturers offer in their warranties. Let’s take into account if it has to be turned or turned over periodically (it is recommended to do so due to a change of season) and take advantage of these occasions to remove the protective cover and leave it ventilating for a few minutes. This is the ideal time to vacuum the mattress, a perfect way to keep the fabric clean and the best way to clean our mattress. Of course, we do not recommend the use of steamers or steam cleaners, as these use water, and if water is not dried well afterwards it will cause the appearance of humidity and bacteria. In addition, if our mattress has memory foam, this material will deteriorate with the water and heat of the steamer, it will wrinkle and lose its properties.
Several tricks on how to clean a mattress.
If despite these tips your mattress has been stained, there are several ways to clean it. Our mattress can be stained easily and mainly by sweat, but also by urine, blood, vomit… The mattress is exposed to all types of body fluids.
- Use dry foam as the best method for cleaning any type of fabric or upholstery, whether it’s your mattress or your sofa or armchair. Dry foams are especially recommended for mattresses with padding, this welcoming layer that can be filled with fibers, latex or memory foam. Pillowtop mattresses should not get wet, so dry cleaning is the best remedy. They usually come in spray form. Spray the surface of your mattress evenly, leave it on for a few minutes, and brush well afterwards. Leave the mattress ventilating and it doesn’t hurt to vacuum it afterwards to make sure the upholstery is clean and dry.
A detail, depending on the upholstery of your mattress, brushing it excessively will cause the appearance of those ugly “balls”, “balls” or “balls” of fabric.
- For specific and localized stains we recommend Volvone or any ammonia solution with surfactants. Depending on the stain, it is poured directly on it or diluted in water and applied. If we use this method, remember to leave the fabric completely dry. You can use a hairdryer if necessary.
And that’s it for our advice. You will read and hear about cleaning tricks for your mattress that use water, vinegar, soap, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and even milk!! We do not recommend experiments or strange mixtures, your mattress is something serious, fundamental to your life and health issue.
Tests carried out by laboratories such as the T.E.C, in Angelet, France, analysed the colonisation of bacteria and mould that generate the appearance of unpleasant odours, and the worst thing is that these degenerate the tissues and cause very important allergic reactions, such as colds, asthma and skin irritations.
At Mi Colchón we are more than specialists in rest, we are your mattressologists, and we know that to extend the life of your mattress you must protect it.
