When it comes to buying a mattress, there are many doubts that assail us What characteristics should it have? Are there different mattresses for different ages? Which one best suits my tastes and needs? In today’s post we will try to answer most of these questions.
According to a latest study by the European Association of Bed Manufacturers, in Spain we change mattresses an average of once every 12.6 years, when it is advisable to change it every 8-9 years, 10 at most.
Sleeping on a good mattress is essential to have a good rest and therefore, good health. Sleeping well helps the immune system, the nervous system, improves blood circulation, helps the musculoskeletal system, heart, brain, metabolism, eyes and skin. If your muscles hurt in the morning or you feel tense, you need to change your mattress.
As we have already talked about on more than one occasion, the important thing is not to sleep more or less hours (as long as the minimum 7 hours are respected) but how deep and restful the sleep is. Uninterrupted sleep is very important to wake up completely refreshed the next morning. The pressure that our mattress exerts on ourselves causes us to sometimes wake up to have to change our position. This is easy to fix: memory foam mattresses do not put any pressure on the body.
In addition, an important fact, more than a third of our lives are spent on the mattress so… why not choose the right one?
Features of a perfect mattress:
- It should be neither too hard nor too soft.
- Firm, so that it supports our body well, but without becoming uncomfortable.
- Homogeneous. It should not have sinkholes or gaps.
- Adaptable to our body and must respect our natural curvature of the spine.
Types of mattresses:
- Foam mattresses can be made of different materials, perhaps the best known is polyurethane. These mattresses can be cut to fit all body types and are priced lower than the rest. The main drawback is that the temperature is not regulated.
- Spring mattresses breathe better and do not have moisture problems, so they are suitable for people who have a tendency to night sweats. Types:
- Independent springs: core with multiple vertical metal springs that narrow in their central section and are linked by metal wires. They are quite inexpensive.
- Continuous spring: single metal wire.
- Bagged springs: hundreds of freestanding springs tucked into individual fabric bags and held together by a thin fastening. It is a very good option for double beds as it allows greater independence for each person. Inside spring mattresses it is a little more expensive.
- Latex mattresses adapt better to the human body than spring mattresses. They offer greater firmness and are very flexible, they also insulate heat very well. Types:
- Synthetic latex: obtained through a synthetic formulation of latex.
- Blend: can contain from 20% to 50% latex and is combined with foams. They are less heavy and produce less moisture.
- Natural latex: 85% of the mattress is latex and the rest is another material.
- There are also a series of special mattresses such as orthopedic mattresses, for people who spend a lot of time in bed due to some illness. For healthy people they are not recommended.
Now we explain how to choose the perfect mattress for you:
- Do you usually sleep alone or with others? As we have already mentioned throughout the post, there are mattresses that allow greater independence when it comes to making movements.
- How tall are you? Your feet should never be outside the mattress.
- How much do you weigh? If you are overweight, your mattress should be firm. Thinner people should use mattresses with more flexibility to better distribute the weight.
- Is the mattress for your usual residence, for a guest room or for your second home? Obviously, a mattress will not have to have the same quality if you are going to use it every day or only sporadically.
- How do you sleep? If you sleep in a soldier or starfish position (we remind you of our post Tell me how you sleep and I’ll tell you what you’re like) a slightly harder mattress is better. On the other hand, if you sleep in a fetal, trunk or speaker position, it is better that your mattress has a little less firmness so that it is better for the shoulder.
- What is the climate of your city and your body temperature like? Spring mattresses are recommended for warm places or for hot people and latex or memory foam mattresses are better for cold places or cold people.
- How much do you want to spend? Prices vary greatly depending on the characteristics of the mattresses.
