According to a study published in PLOS One, studying the relationship between sleep duration and a quantifiable number of factors, it can be shown how sleeping the recommended hours helps your metabolism and your body.
There’s always been a rumor that getting the recommended hours of sleep (an average of 9 hours) helps your health and metabolism stay healthy. But recently, as reported by the Washington Post, it is scientifically proven that not sleeping enough hours can damage your metabolism and make you gain weight easily.
The main cause is that due to the alteration that occurs in your metabolism. Your body reprograms itself to eat more.
This scientific conclusion has been carried out by the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine and the College of Food and Nutrition Science and Technology, tested in a study of 1,615 people in Great Britain between 19 and 65 years old.
The quantifiable factors that have been taken into account for this study have been: waist circumference, blood pressure, lipids, glucose, thyroid hormones and other important aspects of a person’s metabolism.
With all these data, they show that lack of sleep causes you to gain weight is a reality.
But on the contrary, sleeping too much (more than 9 hours) has a similar impact on the body to sleeping too little. In the study, the waist of people who slept an average of 6 hours each night was about 3 centimeters longer than those who slept an average of 9 hours.
So, the relationship between hours of sleep and Body Index Mass is almost linear, that is, one depends on the other.
The theory of why this relationship exists has to do with two hormones that keep track of your food intake. Insufficient sleep disrupts these two hormones and their balance, which leads you to eat more. If you add to this the slow metabolism of some people, there is no doubt why there are people who gain more and more weight.
