Feng Shui (“wind and water”) is a Chinese tradition that deals with the distribution and decoration of the elements of the home, so that the energy flows correctly. A correct location of the home will make the energy circulate harmoniously.
In recent years it has become fashionable in the Western world and many people are already consulting books and professionals of this technique when decorating their homes. In today’s post we give you some guidelines to get started in this world.
In Feng Shui it is based on Yin-Yang (the opposites that complement each other to find balance), on the five natural elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and on the cardinal points (north, south, east and west).
For Feng Shui, colors and their meanings take on a very relevant role. It is considered that each room must be painted in a specific color to fulfill a specific function:
- Yellow color. It transmits energy and joy, so it is perfect for places where family life is done, such as the kitchen and living room.
- Brown, beige, sand, etc. They are stable so they are perfect for the floor.
- Blue color. It represents the sky and tranquility, it is an ideal color for bedrooms.
Lighting is also important. The house should have large windows so that natural light can enter during daylight hours. Fluorescents are not recommended as they weaken one’s own energy, better to use halogens or incandescent, and of course, candles.
The bedroom is one of the rooms that Feng Shui pays the most attention to, as it is the place of rest and where we recharge our energies. Guidelines to follow:
- The light should not be too powerful.
- The walls in pastel colors, a bluish color is ideal.
- The bed should be so that our head is pointing north and neither the bed nor the feet should be facing the door.
The living room is the place where you will spend the most time with the family, so a distracted environment should predominate, where energy flows without any hindrance:
- The living room should be near the front door to the house.
- The armchairs should form a closed figure.
- The materials of the furniture must be natural wood.
- The television is best kept isolated from the rest of the furniture, in a corner for example.
The kitchen is another place in the house to which Feng Shui pays more attention, since it is where the food that we will eat is prepared:
- The lighting must be clear.
- It should be located to the west of the house.
- The sink and the ceramic hob should be as far apart as possible, as they are opposite energies (water and fire).
- The color of the walls should be light and warm.
Although it is sometimes criticized for being a set of oriental superstitions, the truth is that it is a good way to keep order at home and have a better organized home, whether or not you believe in traditions and energy.
