A mattress topper, also known as a topper, is a layer of material that is placed on the surface of the mattress in order to supplement some lack of the mattress itself.
The mattress topper is used, above all, on mattresses with a low height (from 3 to 10 centimeters) to improve the comfort of the person resting on it.
This type of item offers a variety in terms of design: with elastic bands in the corners, with velcro side bands or as if it were a fitted sheet.
Mattress toppers offer the ability to modify the adaptability and comfort of a mattress, whatever type it is, converting, for example, a hard and uncomfortable mattress into good rest equipment.
Mattress topper is not the same as mattress cover
Mattress toppers are protectors used especially to prevent stains and the appearance of mites and bacteria on mattresses.
On the contrary, the mattress topper is mainly used to provide an extra layer of padded material, which improves the adaptability and general comfort of our mattress.
Among the notable advantages offered by mattress toppers:
- Increase in the durability of a mattress, that is, the mattress topper itself is the one that suffers the deterioration of its daily use, keeping the mattress in optimal condition.
- It improves the breathability of a mattress, as long as the mattress topper used is made of breathable materials.
- It offers optimal hygienic conditions, preventing the accumulation of mites and bacteria on the mattress. Thanks to its removable feature, it is easy to remove for washing and hygiene.
Among the variety of mattress toppers we can distinguish: memory foam topper, fiber topper, latex topper and down topper.
It is important to understand that a mattress topper never replaces a good mattress, it extends its life and improves certain properties, but it never replaces the health benefits that derive from using a good mattress.
