Mattresses for back pain

Sleeping on an inappropriate surface can lead to back pain or make it difficult to rest.

A night’s sleep helps you recover from the day, but it’s not just about sleeping, it’s about doing it correctly, “without waking up, bad posture or pain and contractures. Because otherwise, we will feel tired and it will be more difficult for us to work, concentrate or make decisions,” says Ignacio Fernández Zurita, secretary general of ASOCAMA (Spanish Bed Association). To achieve this, sleeping on an appropriate mattress is essential.

According to a study by ASOCAMA, 62% of those surveyed point to sleep equipment as one of the factors that most influence nighttime sleep, only behind stress and heat, and up to 32% of Spaniards say they wake up tired and with discomfort every morning.

But HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT MATTRESS?

Factors such as age, physical condition, height, weight, skin sensitivity and bone elasticity, among others, are decisive when deciding on a certain model. It may also be simply a matter of personal taste.

Physiotherapist Villafaina explains that “if the mattress is too firm, it will exert a lot of pressure on the support points. If it is too soft, those points will not be properly supported, so proper alignment will not be maintained. In addition, it could envelop the person too much, limiting their movement, which can cause fluid accumulation in arthritis or osteoarthritis processes, exacerbating the symptoms.” In any case, “Spanish researchers studied people with long-standing back pain and found that those who slept on a firmer mattress had less discomfort than those who slept on a softer mattress,” he continues.

Experts advise

At Micolchón we recommend testing the sensations that the mattress produces before buying it and comparing them with the one we have at home.

To do this , “we must not limit ourselves to feeling the product, but we must lie on it in the usual posture. And, if it is a double bed, it is recommended that both members of the couple lie down at the same time and check the comfort of their usual postures.” It would be advisable for this test to last at least 10-15 minutes. The expert advises a width of at least 150 centimeters for double beds, “so that both people have enough space to rest properly.”

It should not be forgotten that mattresses have a limited life: a maximum of 10 years. “After this time, the mattress will have lost its initial characteristics of firmness and hygiene, even when at first glance it may seem to be in good condition. You can see how as we get older, we feel more tired when we get up, or muscle pain appears or intensifies.” In addition, “in a decade we have been in contact with this product for about 30,000 hours on average. People have sweated, they’ve been sick in it… so dirt and mites have been accumulating.” On the other hand, the recommendation to renew it is not only because of its logical deterioration. “People’s own characteristics also change with age, and what was comfortable some time ago may no longer be comfortable after a few years.”

It is advisable to leave the base for a few hours in a ventilated place when unpacking it and not to dry clean it or wet the upholstery, but choose to put a washable protective cover to keep the fabrics clean or vacuum its surface.

A study by the European Bed Association indicates that Spaniards are the ones who extend the life of their mattresses the most, which “could say that the quality of our sleep is worse,” says Fernández. According to the same study, a new one can improve back pain by up to 63%. The importance of a good bed should not be underestimated. After all, we spend a third of our lives in it.
