Can dreams be controlled?

Exercising control over dreams depends on the electrical stimulation that the brain receives

The fact of being able to control dreams, of being aware of what is being dreamed and being able to decide what to do with it, seems unreal in the eyes of those who have always considered dreams simply dreams.

However, a large sector of society has claimed on occasion to have been aware of having ever had a lucid dream, of having been dreaming and of having had the ability to control their will during it. This may be due to the electrical stimulation you’ve received during sleep.

According to a study carried out by a team of researchers from the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University (Germany), electrical stimulation can help us control dreams. The experiment carried out with 27 volunteers aimed to find out if lucid dreams could be induced through brain stimulation, that dream that in addition to having full consciousness, can also be directed and controlled.

In this way, the experts evaluated the neural activity of each of the participants while they slept. When the participants reached three minutes of REM, that is, the phase in which brain activity increases, the researchers introduced the electrical stimulations of gamma waves at different frequencies in the frontal and temporal regions of the brain. Moments later, the experts woke up the volunteers and subjected them to the analysis of the LuCiD system, a method designed to rate dreams based on a series of factors.

The conclusion drawn by the experts was that the gamma frequencies of 40 Hz and, to a lesser extent, those of 25 HZ, enhanced the appearance of lucid dreams, which means that depending on the electrical stimulation received by the brain, to a greater or lesser extent, dreams can be controlled.
